Sam and Sarah stepped through the door and spent the rest of the day resting. It had been a long week even if a moment had not passed in their world they tried to relax and do their homework when they could. All while trying to not mop too badly. But that night Sarah cried herself to sleep.
The next day instead of rising with the sun the twins actually slept till their grandparents poked their head in the door to wake them. Sam woke up first and turned over to look at Sarah who was just now waking up. Her eyes still puffy from crying so much. “Hey Sarah. You okay? You look like you had a ruff night. Why did you not wake me?” Sam was up now hugging his sister while she wiped and dabbed at her eyes to help some of the bad puffy to go away. Sarah just shrugged and sniffed a bunch. “I am just so upset about everything. I miss our parents. I am confused about Sally if she is our mom it changes things. The evil wizard. I think a week there did me more bad then good it really drained me. Once I fell asleep I could not get up like usual. I guess you too huh?” Sarah sniffed again looking at her brother.
Sam looked at her then out the window. The sun was up shinning brightly it was nearly 10 am when he looked at the clock before replying. “I slept and had bad dreams and good dreams all to do with Planet Blue. I had no idea you was crying so much. It took me sometime to fall asleep. I am sorry that I did not notice. I miss it too and yes a week there drained me. I do not know think I can do that again it was too much. We are still just kids not adults and we are trying to be adults now it is too much I guess…” Sam trailed off while opening the window and going to get dressed.
Sniffing one more time Sarah sighed and said to Sam “We need to ask today about Sally to Grandpa. Just do not mention her name. And then I want to spend at least part of the day studying the journals and the history book. We do not have to mope around the whole time I guess just keep our mind off things. There is plenty going on. Like soccer try outs are this week and I really want back on the team and I know you do too…”
After breaking with their grandparents of oatmeal cause they over slept. Sam and Sarah spent part of the day reading up on the journals. And the history. Suddenly Sarah sat up and looked at Sam. “Sam check this out! Listen to what dad wrote in here. ‘Today she walked into Planet Blue and never returned. I cried and cried because she never meant to do it. I knew I was too late when she did not come back and I went there to find her and I could not. I hope she lived a good life and will always. I will miss her so much but life must go on without her. I will not be returning to Planet Blue anymore because I miss her too much and all we had there…’ It is how he ended journal number two. It is true! Sally IS our mom. Oh my gosh. I got to go talk to Grandpa right away…” Sarah got up and pulled Sam with her.
Grandpa was in his study reading a book quietly when the twins approached him. Grandma was busy in the kitchen cleaning. He looked up as they walked in almost expecting for a conversation or questions. Realizing he was right just by the looks on their faces.
“Grandpa we have a question for you please. Can you tell us if our mom really died in that fire. Or was that not our mom but someone else that married dad before we could remember the difference?” Sally asked. Sam just sat there waiting for the reply he needed to know just as badly as well. Grandpa paused his reading and looked at them before replying.
“Okay kids. I do not know how much you know. But I am guessing both you found the journals and the secret door. I know you found the door but I was unsure about the journals. Your father wrote one too and I realize he might have mentioned your mom and what happened as I have never really got a chance to read the journals myself. How much do you know?” Grandpa waited patiently for a reply.
Sam began “Well we have been going through The Secret Door for sometime now for weeks. We just got back from a week there. It was a lot of fun we learned a lot and did a lot more. But we can not go back for a week because The Evil Wizard has his eye on us and the King did not think it was wise…” Sam paused before letting Sarah continue for him. “On our second day there we met the King and Queen we had to get some clothes and we found out in their world the humans only around 100 live in a village. We ended up at this store that sells everything and met this lady her name is Sally. She was very nice and we both thought she looked familiar but to her we did not look familiar. We talked it over that she might be related to us some how but did not know how. But now we are guessing from dads very last entry here” Sarah held the journal out to grandpa to see, “That she was possibly our mom. So we needed to ask you if it was and all about what happened too.” Sarah stopped talking and waited.
Grandpa looked at the journal reading the last paragraph and then handed it back to Sarah and Sam before responding. “You are right. She was your mom and I guess still is. I can tell you exactly what happened. Unlike you, your father not only found out about the door himself without my journals he told me about it. I even visited once or twice with him when he was a teen and first going there. I did it part way to protect him from the growing evil. I knew the wizard was gaining power in his part of the land but he was not as bad as I guess he is now. I also wanted to protect my only son and only child on his journeys. He went there a lot and got so addicted more then I did ever did. But when he met your mom, Sally, he was so in love with her he did not go back for a couple of years to the planet. He finally did decide to do it when he had to move in here with Sally for a year right after they got married.” Grandpa paused again for a second to look at them carefully. “They got pregnant when they were not planning to and ended up staying here till she had you guys. Then they got their place together and was ready to move home. I did not realize he was taking Sally with him there sometimes and she too was falling more in love with the world and all there was in it. She had you guys and was overwhelmed I guess which does happen when you have kids. They were both so young, only in their 20’s like I had been and times were different so it was not like me today even people wait longer to get married and especially to have kids. Maybe if they had waited it might have been different…”
“So what happened?” Sam and Sarah said together.
“One day when you were both about six months old you was staying at your new apartment with your father Sally snuck over here. I had no idea she was here till your father called me hours later. She had been so overwhelmed with you guys being twins and all she had gone to the Blue Planet by herself. By the time we realized she was gone it had been HOURS here. Imagine how long that is in a world where time is different and never changes compared to here. You father got here right away and had me watch you guys. He went to the Blue Planet and looked and searched for Sally. He had to keep coming back to me since you can only stay a week. He would come back a day and go back again. In our time he only searched for her for a week but there it was a month. He did not give up but when a month had passed he stopped. It depressed him so much your mom had either died or could not recall anything that he stopped going and never returned to the Blue Planet. It was when you guys were nearly a year he met the lady you called mom they got married right after you turned two and you were so attached to her at that point since you had known her so long you always thought she was mom. I am sure she will always be mom to you…” Grandpa stopped talking again.
“But now she has found you. Fate has brought her to you. This means something for you but sadly it will never mean anything to her. I do not know how it works in there but I do know if she is alive and well it means she has no clue who she is. If she is running a shop she sounds happy but that does not mean she will suddenly drop everything to come back with you. You must understand that. I want you to read up on the history of Planet Blue soon as you can get a hold of a history book. I want you to read up and find out all you can. Maybe there is something in there about if you can find a way to bring her back here maybe things would change again. Okay? Ask the King and Queen when you go back there too. Alright. You got a week to figure things out. Spend it well!” Grandpa smiled at them.
“Thank you for telling us Grandpa…”Sam said and Sarah smiled too and gave him a hug. “I am only to happy to tell you but I want you to know two things. First of all your real mother loved you very much and it broke your fathers heart so much he never wanted you to know. And two your mom who died in that father loved you two as her own. They were never able to have more kids after you two something was not right with her so you were all the kids she ever could have. I am glad you had a nice mother and maybe things will work out with Sally too…” Grandpa turned to get back to his reading.
Sam and Sarah went back to their room spending the rest of the night doing their homework. Before bed they kicked the soccer ball around a bit in their room in excitement for tomorrows try outs. Before going to bed Sarah smiled at Sam and said something. “I hope we can bring Sally home. I want her to come back to us again. I love our grandparents but it would mean so much if our mom could finally come home…” and she was asleep before Sam could reply.
The next day dawned bright and beautiful. The snow had melted and it was warmer then it had been in weeks. The twins had gotten through school alright a bit nervous. Try outs were right after school in their field and they both were hoping to make the team again.
Grandpa and Grandma had come over to watch them and cheer and met them before hand to give them some encouragement. “Hey guys. You will do great out there!” Grandma gave them a hug. “Your parents all of them would be so proud of you. I am sorry they are not here to see you!” Grandpa hugged them too. Smiling at them both they went out to try out for soccer.
Sarah was up first kicking her balls in their right direction with all her might. She missed a few times but did alright and got lots of cheering from the crowd. Her couch smiled at her and said she did a good job. Sam was up a few minutes later. He too did very well barely missing and kicking best he could.
When the names were read at the end of who made the team Sam and Sarah were excited they were both called to return to their team again for another year. “Let us go celebrate with something out to eat. Where do you guys love to go?” Grandma was smiling at them big. While Grandpa looked on.
“Chuck-e-cheese?” They asked. Grandpa and Grandma shook their heads yes. Next thing they knew it they were at their favorite restaurant. While Sam and Sarah played a few games and ate their pizzas their Grandparents were talking.
“They know. They have been there. They have met their mom.” Grandpa stated to Grandma looking serious at her. She looked at him shocked and took a few minutes to reply. “Their mom? Really? She is alive? Oh this is great news! She can come home then…” but she did not finish. He was shaking his head no. “I have never heard of people coming back. Most people that are not born there go there for a reason it is rare for them to stay but some do to get away and they do get away. They never return. I have never heard of a rule that says they can not but they can not recall anything. She did not recognize them at all. If they brought her here it is possible she might just freak out and not recall a thing. I told them to research while they have to stay here for the next few days and then ask questions when they get back…” Grandma and Grandpa sat watching the twins play for sometime before saying it was time to go home.
Over the next few days between soccer and homework Sam and Sarah nearly forgot about studying and trying to find answers. It was not till middle of the week when Sarah pulled out the history books and began her research. Sam was still doing some of his homework. She began to read. The book was huge. Finally she found a table of contents.
There was a section in their called ‘visitors histories’ and it shocked her to see her grandpa, dad and their names all in there too! “Sam we are in this book. Oh I see. I guess it writes itself and so we are in here too just a little about us all too funny!” She smiled to herself while Sam looked up and then back to his work.
After an hour of looking Sarah finally found something. “I found something Sam. Pay attention for a second.” Sam was finishing up and put his books away before coming to sit by her. “Okay listen to this. ‘There is a rule in our world if you come to us and stay for a month it is for good and you will not be able to return to your world. However that does not mean you can not try. We have had one or two people come here and leave again. They might not recall their world at first but once back on theirs they usually do not come back for to bring you back is to bring back your former life and they recall all things. We do not hear from them but to say they are home and not coming back. Our world is big and it is beautiful but not everyone is here to stay.’ And that is how this area ends in the history’s. Sam this means something great. If we can convince her to come with us Sally can come home for good!” Sarah was smiling huge at Sam. He looked at her unsure of how to reply.
“Well that means we have to go there, convince her that she is our mom and then bring her back not knowing if she will do this and then hope she recalls all things. I guess it would be a good thing to try if nothing else.” Sam looked out the window as the sun was setting.
Sam and Sarah enjoyed their first real day in the snow on Thursday. It came down in clumps and stuck. It was so deep it was declared a snow day and they played outside half of it in the snow. Their friends came over and they went sledding. Grandpa and Grandma drove them to a hill where they were aloud to go and play for a while.
“Come on Sam!” Sarah was impatient waiting for Sam to get on their twin bobsled before squealing with delight as they went flying down the hill. Grandpa and Grandma watched them laughing as they tumbled down and had a lot of fun.
That night the kids got warm by the fire drinking hot chocolate. The snow did not fall again that night so there was school the next day. The twins were enjoying going to soccer practice their first day was going to be on Saturday. But they had not forgotten they could return to their world on Sunday it was going to be a great weekend.
Saturday dawned bright and beautiful and warm. Sam and Sarah were up early as always pulling on their soccer clothes and eating breakfast noisy and excited. Grandma and Grandpa had fixed them a big meal so they had lots of energy to do well in the game. “You guys ready? You excited?” Grandma asked smiling at them. They both smiled back in reply and kept eating and talking to each other.
The game was set in a field near their house and they arrived early enough. Sam and Sarah both played well. Their grandparents cheered them on from the side lines. When they were done they went out to celebrate the win with ice cream. The twins were so excited.
Before bed they planned out how their next day into the new world would go and what they would do. Sam and Sarah were all set and went to sleep thinking about their favorite Planet Blue and their return there.
Planet Blue life had gone without the twins. It had been two weeks since they left since time was like that. The Evil Wizard had noticed them disappearing and stopped looking for them by the second day. But he did not stop planning to kidnap them and take over their planet when they got back. “They will never see it coming. For they are just kids no friends here or there and I will get them here for good and kill them all.” He laughed evil to his dragons and creatures. It was a full moon so he went out to do the evil he loved doing killing things and howling at the moons.
Sally had been keeping herself busy at the shop. Business had picked up since the twins had made the place look so good so she had to keep it up. But she missed them for some reason. She could not put a finger on why two kids she had only hung out twice for two days had made such an impact on her. She had lots of customers, many friends but at times missed having a husband and kids. She never wanted to marry anyone here she could not find anyone she liked enough for that. So she missed Sam and Sarah waiting for them to come visit her again. But she did not know why.
That night as Sarah and Sam fell asleep dreaming about their other planet their other world life was going on there as always. But that night Sally dreamed too of a world she only knew now in her dreams. She did not realize she was dreaming about her former life or her kids and now gone husband. She did not realize that life was about to change for them all before she could even wake up she did not know that things were about to get interesting in the dull life of Sally things were about to change for good.
Next morning at the sunrise the twins pulled their clothes on ate their breakfast ready for a trip back to the planet. All before that they told their grandpa good bye and their plans to bring Sally home.
