Chapter 4

Sam and Sarah walked back into the new world. The first thing Sarah did was put the food coloring on the grass enough to see. But what they did not know was the world was going to be so dark.

“Is it sundown already? You would think with three suns they would not set at the same time. I guess they do…” Sam said looking around confused. The suns had just set making the whole sky a color of pink, orange and yellow beautiful colors. “I wish I had a camera three suns setting same time is sure a beautiful thing.” Sarah said with a smile.

“So I figured something out Sarah? I believe although our time stands still theirs runs like normal. We do not know if they even have 24 hour days. Or if they have times for sunsets and rises. This world is very strange indeed. We have a lot to learn. How do they tell time? Do they have time?” Sam was thinking while Sarah wrote in the notebook what they had learned.

“Good thing I packed some flash lights. It will be very dark soon probably in the next hour. We should not stay past that time we do not want to get stuck here. Time might stand still but who knows what the forest holds and what kind of creatures we will encounter if we stay here too long.” Sarah was putting her notebook back in her bag and grabbing her flashlight. She handed one to Sam as well. “More like good thing I brought TWO. I had no idea I had put one in there and put a second one in. Haha oh well.” She shrugged and started walking.

“I think we should just stick to this area near this river thingy. Or is it a stream? I am not a big nature person I guess…” Sam smiled at his own joke. “Oh haha. It’s a river when its so long and so deep I believe. A stream is smaller and this looks more like a river its bigger and it probably is deeper.” Sarah responded looking around.

“We should probably bring a camera next time. I want to document all the things here for our notebooks. But of course we can never share it with anyone. I do not think even when dad came here as a kid they had cameras like ours today. Too bad we do not have cell phones yet that would be even better. Much smaller too. Oh well.” Sarah shrugged looking at the final moments of the sun sets. “We are going to have make stuff up as we go along. Like figuring out when the suns set. We have plenty of time to come here. Just sneaking off before this time and we can see if they set together or separate. Hey check it out the moons are coming out. I see two! I told you it was like our dream!” She smiled big at her brother.

Sam was staring at the moons as well. “Very cool. Look they come out like ours does same time too. Both are full. Makes you wonder if that means they are like ours with new moons, half moons, etc. I wonder where we are really in the galaxy if this is a planet no one has discovered yet?” Sam turned to start walking gesturing for Sarah to follow him. The twins walked for sometime next to the water before it was too dark to see.

“I have an idea. We should camp here next time. Bring a tent, some sleeping bags. I bet we could find some at the house. We could see just test out our grandparents see if they are willing to get us some if they do not have any. Say we want them to camp in our rooms. I bet they would fall for that. Or even camp in the house it is huge after all.” Sarah was still talking when they noticed a flash of white in the forest behind them.

“Oh dear Sarah. Something is coming right at us. RUN!!!!” Sam looked panicked and started running straight at Sarah grabbing her hand as he went. From the forest came what looked like white horses. Lots of them. At least ten or fifteen. Once the herd had passed them they had chance to breath and figure out what had just happened.

“I think it was a herd of unicorns? Oh wow. I guess that makes sense that our fantasy creatures would live in a world like this. Man they are beautiful up close. I am in love haha. Did you see them Sam? Did you see what they were?” Sarah was smiling at the pack now making a dot in the distance. “I did not expect them to be so fast almost like horses but they seemed even faster!” She turned to look at her brother. He was staring at them too. “Yeah you are right it was unicorns. I saw the horn. I never thought I would see one in person. I thought they were not real. Although some people like to claim they are real and were real in our world too. So no big surprise. I am just waiting to see something I really love like a dragon or something. Something cool like that would be awesome!” Sam smiled back at Sarah.

“It is getting dark. Maybe we should head back. I do not want anything big to come charging at us when we can not see it.” Sarah was staring back where they had come from. “Besides we wont be able to see which way to go if we do not get back soon.” Sarah started walking back the way they had come. “Come on Sam lets go!”

After walking for what seemed like an hour the twins finally found the door to go out. They really had to look carefully for the food coloring on the ground. “Is that it? Oh here it is!” Sam finally yelled out finding the coloring and the door. The twins pulled the door open and were back to the room at the house as if they had never left.

That night they talked about all they had learned. But tried to be quiet as to keep their grandparents from hearing all the things that had gone on. “We can not let them know we know about this place. Even if Grandpa was one of the discoverers of it. Not unless we need their help and currently we do not need their help.” Sam said before turning off his light and telling his sister good night. Their grandparents had already come in and said good night a few minutes before.

The next day when the sun had barely come up the kids ran downstairs and waited for breakfast. They wanted to spend a full day in their new planet and so they were anxious to get going. Grabbing sleeping bags and a tent they had found in one of the other rooms they had prepared for a full day and night there. Bringing along lots of batteries and flash lights. Some food and of course their notebooks and pens.

Grandma and Grandpa were suspicious of nothing and simply made them a delicious breakfast which they ate right up. “We will be hanging out at home today if that is alright with you after all it is just two days till school.” Sam said with a smile. “We might do some more snow playing tomorrow though!” Sarah added as an after thought.

Gathering together a few waters and their food they snuck back upstairs each carrying a sleeping bag & pillow along with their food and things they would need for the night. They knew they could camp by the hole and be back in two seconds if need be. “But just incase we should be prepared to stay the whole night. It will seem really strange doing this because we are coming back and it will be day here but we will be tired from doing this all night. Gonna be a real adventure!” Sarah said smiling at her brother. Sam just shook his head and dragged his stuff towards the room.

The door had moved again it was no shock but they eventually found the door and opened it up. In the other planet the suns had just risen and were only half way up. “Do you see that!” Sam yelled excitedly. “The suns are rising but not at the same time. Notice how they are slightly apart from each other. Its almost like it was made that way.” He smiled big at them. Sarah noticed too right then the two moons were slowly fading but not at the same time. “I guess that answers our question about if they set and rise together. Makes sense then they are just hanging out together but are not really part of the big sky more than just friends.” Sarah said while setting down her stuff.

“Okay I think we should just hide the camping stuff here in the bushes I do not think anyone will come steal two pillows and two sleeping bags. Then we can come get them when it gets darker. This will be very fun. We should set up the sleeping bag as soon as we can get back though so I advice we do not come back here later then sunset if not sooner.” Sarah said while stuffing her stuff behind the bushes. “Good thing we did not bring much these bushes are really not that big. I thought they looked bigger last time. Huh. Oh well. Put your stuff here Sam.” Reaching for his stuff Sarah stuffed the rest there. Then marked the grass by the door with red & blue dye before shutting it all the way.

The kids traveled for a while by the river following it all the way till it branched off and continued in another direction which looked like a lake. “We should go see how far the water goes. We got nothing better to do for now. Might be fun. Keep your eye out for anything unusual for our notebooks of course!” Sam said almost running next to the river where it bent and continued to the right.  “Sam hang on stop running so fast.” Sarah tried to keep up but gave up and just walked fast. She was not much of a runner even when they played soccer she was sometimes a bit more slower then everyone else.

Once the water broke off into the lake Sam noticed something else. “Sarah? Look over there!” He whispered pointing to the middle of the lake where there were trees growing up to cover the edge area. Sarah was so shocked she did not say anything for a minute. “Are those mermaids? Look they are bathing in the water. There must be 15 of them this is so incredible!” She whispered back while staring at them and edging a bit closer. “Be quiet we do not want them to know we are here!” She whispered once more while pulling out her camera and closing in for a picture. She took a few before deciding to stop and they never saw her.
When she got back to Sam she was smiling extra big. “You have to go see them! Just be careful and do not let them see you.” She whispered while pulling out her notebook to write in.

After Sam came back they sat resting and talking under the shade of a tree. The tree itself looked so much like one from back home had they not thought about it they never would have thought it was anything else but the one in their backyard.

“What I noticed about them is that they all look different. Different shades of skin, different hair colors. Not even like usual colors I saw pinks and blues and yellows and purples. It was so cool!” Sarah was talking while writing in her notebook. Sam agreed with her. “Yeah I saw that too. I did not know they existed little alone that they came with such colorful hair and stuff. Makes you know it is not a dream when you see things like that.” He smiled and pulled out his own notebook to jot in.

After nibbling on some of their food the kids got up and followed the river back out to where they had come in. They were standing there staring at the water wondering if they should continue with no guidance at all like this. “I think to be safe we are going to have to just stick to this area till we figure out how far we can travel and still get back to go home. We need to think up some way to get back here and still travel a lot. This is a huge planet who knows how long it would take to explore the whole thing. I bet no one else has explored the whole thing. It is just not possible. Is it?” Sam looked at his sister wondering about it out loud. “Wonder if we could somehow put a track device on the door. So we could always come back to it. We should read those journals later and see if they talk about how far they went and were able to come back.” Sarah said.

Sam and Sarah decided finally to just keep walking and make their way back this direction eventually. “It will be easier if we just go as far as we can and see what other creatures we can come across. This is so exciting seeing them all up close like this. Its like living in one of my favorite books!” Sarah smiled big almost skipping as she went along.

Right as the sun was in the way of going down soon the twins noticed something else. It was small and flew by them very quickly. Then a few more flew by. “Was that a humming bird? Or what else could it be?” Sarah said to Sam. Sam looked at where it had been and saw a few more fly by. “Nah. No humming bird is that slow. They are too fast to see. Plus it did not look like a humming bird. It looked like a little person? Oh my. Is it a fairy??” Sam looked excited at Sarah. “You know. I bet it was a fairy. Wow this has been an exciting day. Mermaids and fairies all before we go to sleep. I wonder what the night will bring!” Sarah looked around as if to find something else to talk about. “I wonder if they are like Tinkerbell and they talk and stuff. Wait. Tinkerbell was a pixie. What is the difference between them? Are they the same thing?” Sarah wondered.

The twins got back to where their stuff was hidden just before the suns began to dip from the sky. One by one the suns kissed the world good night as the kids began to build their tent. Just at dark they built a fire from some wood they found and were talking over the fire while eating some food for dinner. “Do you know what is so funny? We are going to go home and then we are going to eat dinner again! Haha. Cracks me up doing this. And no one will be the wiser but us.” Sam laughed to himself at his own jokes. Sarah in the mean time had been sketching some pictures into her notebook and writing down some things.

“I miss our parents. I really do. I miss mom and dad. It is going to take some time to get over this if we can ever get over it. I hope that therapy Grandma wants to have us go to is not too strange. I do not know if I want to go to it. What if there is no one there our age?” Sarah was feeling sad now. Sam patted her arm giving her a side hug. “It will be okay. They would want us to be happy. This planet this world it is making us happy. This is something I just know they would want us to be. Even if it means coming through a secret door.” Sam said looking down at his food. “We should probably turn in for the night soon. Wait how are we going to wake up?” Sam looked a bit confused.

“You know what I noticed? The moons came out one by one. And both are again full. Oh and to answer your question we will be getting up using this!” Sarah held up the alarm clock from their room for him to see. “And it runs on no batteries.” She said with a wink.

After setting the alarm the twins laid on the ground looking up at the stars. “They are so close we could almost touch them. It is so cool!” Sam pointed up towards them. “And the moons are so bright and full it is almost like day time.” Sarah added. Both were getting tired and finally pulled themselves into the tent for the night. Zipping and locking it from the inside.

But even after being so tired they both took time falling asleep more than they wanted to. Much like at home the sun woke them even before the alarms which was a shock. But the fact they had 3 suns rising same time probably was the real factor. Sam sat up and looked over but Sarah was gone so he unzipped the tent. She was sitting outside looking at the sunrises while sitting on the rock from last night.

“Hey sleep head.” She said waving and smiling. He smiled and waved back. “How long have you been up?” Sam asked Sarah. “Oh for about a half hour. I got woken up by the first sun rise but three was something I wanted to see them all and so I came out and I timed it. They come up about 5 minutes apart. But they all stay in the sky in the same point almost so you could hardly tell if I had not been here to see it and record it we would have never known it to be true.” She was smiling at him. “Oh and sorry about that last night the whole crying thing. I have not been myself for some reason lately.” Sam just shook his head like it was okay.

After packing up to go home the kids made their way to the door and pulled themselves inside. They hid their stuff in one of the rooms before going downstairs to relax with their grandparents. And not a minute had passed since they last left.
