Chapter 5

Monday morning came too soon. Sam and Sarah were ready to go before the school bus arrived. Each as nervous as the other. “Are they going to be talking about us? What will our friends say? I can not believe its been three weeks since our parents died!” Sarah worried out loud to Sam. Sam looked just as concerned as his sister. “It will be okay Sarah. At least it will be our school and not a new school. Things could be way worse.”

The bus came to a stop at the corner by their house and the twins climbed on board sitting next to each other. Then their friends started to come on after every few stops. Matt and Tyler came on first and sat in front of Sam and Sarah. “Hey guys how are you doing today?” Matt said smiling. Tyler just looked at them and say “Hey” before turning back around. “Doing alright. Anxious about going back to school. How about you guys? Have a good holiday?” Sam replied back. Sarah smiled at them.

Then her two friends came on at the same stop. Ashley and Kristen. “Hey there Sarah! How are you doing? So sorry to hear about what happened to you guys over the break. Must be horrible. How is it going living at your grandparents house now? Do they just sleep all day? Haha. I am just kidding.” Kristen smiled. “Sorry, Kristen is just trying to lighten the mood up a bit. Hope you two are doing okay.” Ashley and Kristen sat down across from the twins.

The bus ride finally ended and all the kids got off quickly and hurried off to their classes just as the bell was ringing. The twins were in the same class as was Tyler, Matt, Kristen and Ashley so they all went in together and took their seats.

The day flew by and before they knew it, it was time for Sarah and Sam to go home. The bus ride home was noisey as always but the twins were talking to themselves in the back after their friends got off at their stops. “So do you want to go there again today? You know soon as we say we are doing our ‘homework’ how would anyone notice. I do have a lot to do but I have been working on some ideas about how to get home. We need a GUIDE. Did you read the journals at all. Both Grandpa and Dad found a creature or someone to show them back to where they came in once they were there so they never got lost. We need to find a speaking creature willing to talk to us to guide us to the door. I am thinking maybe a person would be nice but anything will do.” Sarah was so excited. Sam looked at her thinking. “Yeah I think I recall seeing that too. A guide. How do we find someone who is willing? We have not seen a lot of people and the ones we have seen have been creatures not willing to barely go by us. Mermaids, unicorns, brownies, and fairies. Nothing of help to us.” Sam was shaking his head while counting on his finger.

“Then we have to keep looking. We can not give up. It is nearly impossible to be exploring the world when we can not do anything about how to get back. So yeah I think we should go again today and just walk around keep an eye on where we have been and hope it works out. Maybe an hour or two if we hurry and do it when there is still some day light…” Sarah looked out the window at the sky now gray and beginning to look like snow. “More snow means more chances to stay inside…” she added.

That evening the twins climbed the stairs after dinner and said they were going to go and do their homework and pretended to do go their room shutting the door. “Hope they do not come look for us. Do you wonder if we are gone and they come even if a minute has not passed would we still be gone? I wonder if it works like that. No it could not it does not make sense to think that they could see us not here. Must not think like that.” Sam thought out loud grabbing his backpack and flashlight. “I will go get the food coloring and the waters. Go and find the door okay Sarah?” Sam turned and left the room.

Soon as he returned Sarah had finally found the door. “It moved again Sam to ANOTHER room again. This is so annoying. I think it has moved to every room now at least once.” Sarah looked upset but walked to the door and opened it carefully so as to get them both inside.

What they did not know was that grandpa had found them going into the room today and was watching for them to return. He only had to stand there a minute he knew and they would come back. But he decided to wait that minute out anyway. “I knew they would find it eventually the way they were always exploring here.” He noted to himself while waiting.

The suns were ready to set soon as they were lower in the sky but not yet set. “We have another hour I am guessing of daylight before they set. Hope that is enough time. I wish we could somehow figure out the time difference between the two. It is like we are on central time they are on eastern time or something else. Who knows. Hey what time is it here? Figure it out there maybe we can figure out the time difference like that…”

“I thought you know my watch does not work here does it? Oh it does work. I think I just thought that last time. Okay I think since it is five o’clock our time and it is still light here they are an hour behind us not ahead. It is already dark at home. So there you go. We are in Eastern time so they must be in our central time or even pacific time zone? So odd. This is not our planet but still going with our time is very strange indeed….” Sam looked around confused but kept walking.

This time the twins decided to follow the trees and bushes the opposite way of the river they always started off by. “It will be easier to get back and we can still explore” Sarah said as they walked. The trees kept going on and on in the forest the twins only kept walking to see how far they went. Finally there was a large clearing and that is where they first saw the first real animal like they had at home. A deer. Or so they thought. The deer was walking all normally “It is definitely a male deer” Sam had said. Then they noticed it had TWO heads. “Oh my gosh. Look at that! Two heads. And I thought we had found an animal like at home. I wonder if they have more things with more heads like ours. So strange. Do you notice the other head is female?” Sarah was so shocked by this she could not look away as it ate some grass then kept walking towards the forest.

After the clearing was more trees and a stream not a river. “Notice how it looks like a river but it is smaller. That is a stream!” Sarah said smiling. Going over to fill up her water bottle which she had drank almost all of. “And the water taste alright. I hope I do not get sick.” She said staring at it before drinking some more. Sam came and filled up his nearly empty one too. “We need more water bottles or bigger ones these are too small” he said laughing.

The stream gave way to another spot of clearing and that is where they noticed the first mountain. It was more rocks then anything but steep and went way up and did not seem to go back down for sometime. “I wonder if we could climb it a bit. I bet the view up there is great and we could see what else it out there.” Sam started looking for a safe way up while Sarah looked around to see if there was another way. Finally the twins both good athletes decided to try to climb just a little bit. “We should not climb too high we have to get back down soon as the suns set which could happen at any minute they are already dipping lower.” Sam pointed at the sky.

Once the twins had finally found a way up they were able to get a better lay of the land. Most of it was just like a big nature area lots of trees, water ways, and some mountains. But far in the distance Sarah saw something she was not expecting. “I see two things Sam do you see them? A castle far on that hill. And a dragon flying around it. Do you see it? Huh?” Sarah was pointing in the direction she had been looking. Sam looked too with a big smile on his face. “I just knew we would find a dragon. Totally awesome. I wonder who lives in the castle! A Princess? Maybe a Princess in the tower!” Sam was laughing but Sarah looked confused. “Humans live here? That might not be so true. Be careful it could just be a castle with monsters inside. Maybe we should find a guide first to find out I do not want to be wondering around without one and find out there is some evil creature up there even if it does look like a human place…”

Climbing back down the mountain the twins washed their hands in the water and kept walking back the way they came. “Same time tomorrow right?” Sam said to Sarah as she opened up the door. “Sure Sam same time tomorrow. We do have homework to do.” The planet was dark as they closed the door and went down the stairs back to their room. They did not notice Grandpa still standing there waiting for them to come back. He did not say anything but went downstairs again for the rest of the evening. The twins worked on homework and went to bed as they always did. Grandpa said nothing still after saying good night to him but smiled to himself as he went to bed as well.
